The San Damiano Cross

The San Damiano CrossSan Damiano cross

Once you visit Assisi, you will happen to see the little ancient church restored by St. Francis, in this little church which was not been modified throughout the centuries, there used to hang the crucifix which has been relocated to Saint Clare Basilica (La Basilica di Santa Clara) and can be admire by millions of visitors from all over the world, as the San Damiano Cross.

Besides containing the image of Jesus, it has some various characters:

It was painted in Umbria in the 12th century by Syrian monk,  it is 6.9 ft long and 4.25 ft wide (2.10 x 1.30 m) painted on canvas adhered to pecan wood board.

The style is Romanesque but you can feel the oriental eastern Byzantine art, as it used to be of Syrian school, and there was a group of Syrian monks in nearby Spoleto.

Saint Francis was praying before this cross in the small chapel.

In the Icon, above the head you can see the words: HIS NAZARE REX IUDEORUM”which means “Jesus of Nazareth, king of the Jews”.

We thought that this cross is interesting art, representing the spirit of La Mucchia, and we gave to a talented Russian artist specialized in Icons, to paint for us 13 pieces, by hand, all are hanging in the luxurios suites at La Mucchia casa vacanze, to be admired by our guests.
